Amazon growing rapidly in Europe
While Amazon (like almost all US retailers) has always been dominated by North American sales, it has been able to grow the International businesses to quite significant size.
North America still represents 67% of all revenue for the company. One has to note that the breathtaking ability of the North American segment to grow even at the scale of hundreds of billions, has shadowed the rapid growth in other markets.
International segment is already a $155 billion business for Amazon, a top 5 retailer in the world by itself.
Of the international markets, Germany has for long been the Amazon market outside of the North America. The growth of the German business had started to diminish during the late 2010s. However, during the pandemic Germany leaped from $22 billion to almost $40 billion, a 68% growth in two years.
Even more significant was the growth in the UK where Amazon grew by 82% in two years. Currently the UK business is $32 billion (£23,5 billion) business. This makes Amazon already bigger than the grocery giant Asda.
Amazon is already a top 3 retailer in UK and biggest non-food retailer.
The fastest growing segment of the international for Amazon is the “Rest of the World”, which consists everything outside Germany, UK and Japan. With the openings of several new markets, like Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden, the company keeps on growing fast.
However, the biggest potential in the “Rest of the World” is with the Asian giant market of India. Amazon has for long been trying to correct the mistakes it did in China by conquering the other big Asian market.
