Online grocery in Sweden growing on new and higher level

Online grocery saw a steep decline in Year on Year growth numbers as the online grocery revenues dropped by -30% in March and by -19% during the first quarter of 2022. However, these figures don’t give a full impression of the state of the online grocery industry in Sweden.

The steep declines that online has seen during the last five months comes off of a totally unprecedented growth period from last year. From 11/2020 to 3/2021 online grocery revenues jumped more than 100% every month. As the society has opened up after the pandemic, these growth numbers would have been really difficult to reach.

Strong growth to pre-pandemic levels

However, online grocery has grown significantly compared to Q1/2020 or Q1/2019. Q1/2022 online revenues are 87% higher than during the same time period two years ago. Majority of the growth has come from the Click & Collect, which has grown by 150% and represents almost half of all online groceries (49%).
