Online grocery remains big in Sweden

Online grocery sales decreased for a fourth month in a row in Sweden. However, online remains still an important channel in Swedish grocery retailing: 6,4% of all groceries were sold through online in January 2022.

The comparable decline for online is a result of really high growth numbers from the same time last year. During the winter of 2020/2021 online grew monthly with growth numbers ranging from 109% to 192%. It would be very difficult to match those growth numbers.

Despite the heavy growth last year, online almost matched that level this year. In January online decreased only by -6,7%.

Online is now equally distributed between home delivery and Click & Collect services. As ICA ramps up its big Ocado warehouse, it will be interesting to see whether the balance between will shift to home delivery.
