Grocery market in Sweden growing slowly with online driving the growth
The grocery trade in Sweden continued to grow faster than inflation in Q3/2024, albeit quite slightly. The market has outgrown inflation for the last year, and inflation peaked only during two months above the market growth. This means that the grocery industry has returned to a more normal level of volume growth.
In September, the slight acceleration of inflation and the slowdown in the growth of the grocery trade led to only a slight increase in sales volumes.
The Swedish grocery market is growing online faster than the stores (+7,5% vs +3,6%). This has led to a slight increase in the share of e-commerce: 3,7% -> 3.,6%
Home delivery has been growing in the online grocery market for over a year, while Click & Collect has been increasing since the end of last year. With Q3, the growth rate of Click & Collect increased faster (+11,4% vs +4,6%).
Due to its longer growth, the home delivery market Q3/2024 has already grown 10% above the peak of the pandemic period (Q3/2021).
It will be interesting to see how the online grocery market develops if the importance of price is emphasised less than during the inflationary period.
