Early easter drives grocery revenues into decline while online soars

Sales of groceries in Sweden declined slightly in April due to an early Easter that was mostly in March. The early Easter also dragged online grocery sales down in March, while they soared in April. The long-term (for a year now) trend for online grocery has been increasing growth. Since May 2023, online grocery sales have steadily accelerated growth with some occasional months of decline.

April saw the first double-digit growth for the online channel since June 2021. Cumulatively, for 2024, home delivery has grown by +7% and Click and Collect has grown by +6,1%.

In April, food inflation made a comeback, showing a small growth after a slight decline in March. This shift in inflation, coupled with a slight decline in sales, resulted in a minor drop in sales volumes, marking the end of a four-month period of growing sales.
