Lidl and Schwarz Group continuing as the biggest European grocer

The parent company of Lidl, Schwarz Group, has remained the biggest European grocery retailer by a significant margin with 2022 revenues topping 154 billion euros. Aldi (Nord and Sud) figures are yet to be released, but it remains unlikely that the company will reach its main competitor.

The two german discounters are the only retailers in Europe to reach 100 billion euros in revenue.

The old giants of European grocery retailing, Carrefour and Tesco, are behind in revenues. Before the financial crisis, Carrefour and Tesco were significantly bigger than Schwarz and Aldi.

  • In 2006 Carrefour's revenues were 86% bigger than Schwarz Group’s

  • in 2022 Schwarz Group was 69% bigger

Kaufland driving growth for Schwarz Group

Lidl is the biggest brand within the Schwarz Group representing approximately 75% of revenues. However, the hypermarket chain Kaufland grew more rapidly, with 16,5% growth against the 13,9% growth for the Lidl brand.

Online remains an almost inconsequential part of the business, with only two billion euros for 2022.
